Quick answer: Samsung started rolling out One UI 9, its Android 17-based update, on 16 September 2026, beginning with the Galaxy S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra. Other Galaxy phones get it “gradually” after that, and Samsung hasn’t published a full device-by-device schedule. To check, open Settings > Software update > Download and install.
If you own a Galaxy phone from the last few years, One UI 9 is the big update of the year for you. It brings a set of new Galaxy AI tools, a Warranty and Care section inside Settings, and wider scam-call protection that now covers India.
Here’s what’s confirmed as of 5 October 2026, which phones are likely to get it, and whether to install it the moment it shows up.
When does One UI 9 come to my Galaxy phone?
Samsung’s official announcement, dated 16 September 2026, says the update starts with the Galaxy S26 series and “is expected to gradually roll out to other Galaxy devices.” It doesn’t give dates for specific models.
The S26 rollout itself has been staggered by country. Sammy Fans reported on 30 September that the stable build had reached S26 owners in South Korea, the US, India and several Asian and Middle Eastern markets, with more countries to follow. SamMobile reported on 29 September that in some regions, including parts of India and Europe, it reached members of the One UI beta programme first. In short, if you own an S26 and haven’t got it yet, it should arrive within weeks.
For everyone else, history is a reasonable guide: Samsung usually updates the previous year’s flagships and foldables next, then mid-range A-series phones over the following months.
Which Samsung phones will get One UI 9?
Samsung hasn’t released an official eligibility list in its rollout announcement. Based on Samsung’s update promises, Android Authority’s list expects these models to qualify:
- Galaxy S: S26 series, S25 series, S24 series and S23 series (including FE and Edge models)
- Foldables: Galaxy Z Fold 7, Fold 6 and Fold 5; Z Flip 7, Flip 6 and Flip 5 (including FE variants)
- Galaxy A: a range of A-series phones from the A57 down to the A07
- Tablets: Galaxy Tab S11, Tab S10 and Tab S9 series, among others
Treat this as an expected list, not a promise. Exact timing varies by model, region and carrier. The newest foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8, already run Android 17, according to Business Today.
What’s new in One UI 9?
Samsung lists a long set of changes. These are the ones most people will notice:
Scam Detection, now in India
Samsung says its on-device Scam Detection for calls is expanding to more countries, including India. Given how common phone scams are, this is the most practical addition for Indian users.
Privacy Alerts and Security Brief
Privacy Alerts uses on-device AI to flag apps asking for permissions they don’t seem to need. Security Brief puts security warnings into Now Brief, Samsung’s daily summary screen.
Warranty and Care
A new section in Settings lets you check your warranty, run self-diagnostics, see repair estimates and book a service visit. It saves a trip to a separate app when something goes wrong.
Camera and AI tools
- My FanCam: pick a person in a video and the phone keeps them centred as the scene moves.
- Now Nudge: context-aware suggestions during conversations, such as saving a reservation or location.
- Interpreter: a new Thread View makes live translated conversations easier to follow.
- Voice Recorder: summaries now use headings and tables.
- Document Scan: better handling of curved pages, with manual adjustment.
- Creative Studio: image-generation ideas based on your upcoming events.
Some Galaxy AI features depend on hardware, so older or cheaper models may not get all of them even after updating.
How to check for and install One UI 9
- Back up your phone. Use Settings > Accounts and backup, or Samsung Cloud or Google One.
- Free up some space. A major update needs several gigabytes. Our guide to freeing up phone storage helps if you’re short.
- Charge to at least 50 percent, or keep the phone plugged in.
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > Software update > Download and install.
- If the update appears, tap Download, then Install now (or schedule it for overnight).
If nothing shows up, your phone or region simply isn’t in the current wave. Checking repeatedly won’t speed it up; Samsung pushes updates in batches.
Should you install One UI 9 right away?
For S26 owners, yes, once it appears. The release followed a public beta, and it includes the September 2026 security patch, according to SamMobile.
For older phones, it’s reasonable to wait a week after the update reaches your model and skim owner forums or the Samsung Members app for problems. Expect a day or two of slightly worse battery life after any major update while the phone re-optimises apps in the background. That usually settles on its own.
If you depend on your phone for work or banking, it’s also worth making sure your key apps have been updated recently in the Play Store or Galaxy Store, since app makers often push fixes for a new Android version in the first few weeks.
One thing not to do: don’t install firmware files from unofficial websites to “get it early.” Stick to the Software update menu.
Frequently asked questions
Is One UI 9 available in India?
Yes, for the Galaxy S26 series. Reports from Sammy Fans and SamMobile in late September 2026 say the stable update has reached S26 users in India. Other models should follow over the coming months.
Which Android version is One UI 9 based on?
One UI 9 is based on Android 17, which Google released earlier in 2026.
Will my Galaxy S22 get One UI 9?
It’s unlikely. The S23 series is the oldest Galaxy S line on Android Authority’s expected list. Samsung hasn’t confirmed an official list for every model, so check Settings > Software update to be sure.
Is One UI 9 free?
Yes. Samsung delivers One UI updates free over the air through Settings > Software update. Be suspicious of anyone asking you to pay for an update or to install it from a link, as that’s a common scam.
Will One UI 9 slow down my phone?
Major updates can feel slower for a day or two while apps are re-optimised. If it still feels sluggish after a week, a restart and clearing space usually helps.
