Quick answer: You can download a copy of your data from TikTok, X and Instagram in a few taps, usually from the Settings menu. The file can take minutes to a few days to prepare, and download links can expire, so grab it promptly.
Platforms let you export your posts, messages, followers and more. A backup helps if an account is hacked or banned, if you want to leave a service, or if you simply want to see what a company holds on you.
The steps below follow the platforms’ own help pages and a consumer-group guide. Menus change often, so if a label differs, look for “Your information”, “Your data” or “Download your data” in settings.
Why should I download my social media data?
There are three common reasons. A backup protects your photos, videos and messages if an account is locked or hacked. An export also makes it easier to move to another service, and it shows you what a platform has stored about you, including ads you have interacted with.
How do I download my TikTok data?
According to PIRG:
- Tap Profile, then the three-bar menu at top right.
- Choose Settings and privacy, then Account.
- Tap Download your data.
- On the Request data tab, pick the default (all data, TXT format) or a custom selection. You can switch the format to JSON.
- Tap Request Data.
- Check the Download data tab. “Processing” means it is not ready yet. When it is, tap Download and complete the quick verification.
PIRG says newer accounts may get the file almost instantly, while long-time users may wait a few days. Once ready, you have 4 days to download it before it expires. The file includes lists of videos you watched, messages, favorite hashtags, in-app purchases and accounts you follow. It does not explain how the algorithm picks your videos.
How do I download my X archive?
The X Help Center gives these steps:
- Tap your profile icon, then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Account, then Your X data.
- Verify your identity with a code sent to your email or phone.
- Under Download your data, tap Request data next to X.
- When the archive is ready, click Download in the email, while logged in on the same browser. You get a .zip file.
X says preparation “may take a few days” and your email address must be confirmed first. The archive comes in HTML and JSON and covers posts, direct messages, media, followers, lists, inferred interests and ads you have seen. X’s page does not say how long the link stays valid.
How do I download my Instagram data?
The Instagram Help Center says you can review your information under Profile history and export a copy to your device or an external service. The help page text we could retrieve did not include the full steps, file formats or timing. Open the page in the app or browser for the current instructions.
What are the limits of a data download?
A download is a snapshot, not a perfect mirror. FOX 9 reports that some data may be unavailable, such as data that affects other people’s privacy. Because of processing times, the last 24 to 48 hours of some categories may be missing. You can submit another request later to capture more recent activity.
The same article says TikTok can also transfer data directly to a third-party service. You open the other app, log in to TikTok if asked, choose the categories, tap Continue and confirm the transfer in the third-party app.
Exports also tend to be large and messy. Messages, watch history and ad data may arrive as many separate files. Open the JSON or HTML version in a text editor or browser, and look first at the profile, posts and followers files. If you only want your own photos and videos, a custom selection keeps the file smaller, as PIRG describes for TikTok.
What should I do with the file?
Treat the download like a sensitive document. It can contain private messages, location-related details and your full activity history, so do not leave it in a shared folder or email it to yourself.
- Store it safely. It contains private messages and activity. Keep it in encrypted storage or a password-protected folder. Our guide to free password managers can help.
- Download it quickly. TikTok links expire after 4 days.
- Request again before big changes. If you plan to delete an account, export first.
- Secure the account. Anyone with access can request your archive. If you suspect a break-in, see how to recover a hacked Instagram account.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a data download take?
It varies. PIRG says TikTok can be near-instant for newer accounts or take days for older ones. X says it may take a few days.
Which format is best?
TikTok defaults to TXT and offers JSON, which is machine-readable. X provides HTML and JSON. HTML or TXT is easier to read; JSON suits transfers to other tools.
Does the file show why I see certain videos?
No. PIRG notes TikTok’s export does not explain how its algorithm chooses content.
Can I download data without the app?
X’s email download link works in a browser. Other platforms may also offer web settings, but check each help page.
