An app that worked fine yesterday and won’t open today — crashing on launch, freezing on a splash screen, or just doing nothing when you tap the icon — is almost always update-related. Here’s the troubleshooting order that fixes it most of the time, from fastest to most involved.
1. Force close it and try again
Sounds obvious, but a genuinely stuck process is a common cause. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and hold, then swipe the app away. On Android, open Recent Apps and swipe it off, or go to Settings > Apps > [app name] > Force stop. Reopen it once it’s fully closed.
2. Restart your phone
A full restart clears out background processes and cached memory that a force-close doesn’t touch, and it resolves a surprising share of “won’t open” cases on its own.
3. Check for a newer update
Sometimes the version that just installed is the buggy one, and the developer has already pushed a fix. Open the App Store or Play Store, search for the app, and see if an update is waiting.
4. Clear cache (Android) or offload the app (iPhone)
On Android: Settings > Apps > [app name] > Storage > Clear cache. This doesn’t touch your logged-in data. On iPhone: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > [app name] > Offload App, which removes the app but keeps its documents and data, then reinstall from the App Store.
5. Delete and reinstall
If nothing else has worked, a full delete-and-reinstall clears out any corrupted files left over from the update. You may need to log back in afterward, so make sure you know your credentials first.
6. Check your OS version
Occasionally an app update drops support for older operating system versions. If your phone’s software is a couple of major versions behind, check whether an OS update is available under Settings > General > Software Update (iPhone) or Settings > System > System update (Android).
