Photos stuck on a single grey tick, endlessly “sending,” or failing outright with a red exclamation mark are one of WhatsApp’s most common annoyances. Here’s how to fix it, in the order most likely to work.
Check your actual connection
Photos need a real, working connection, not just a Wi-Fi icon showing. Try loading a website or another app that needs data. If your connection is genuinely weak, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data (turn one off, then on) often reconnects to a stronger signal.
Check WhatsApp’s own storage settings
If mobile data usage for WhatsApp has been restricted, photos will only send over Wi-Fi. Check Settings > Storage and data inside WhatsApp and make sure “Photos” is allowed to use mobile data if you need it to.
Restart the app
Force close WhatsApp completely and reopen it. Stuck sends often clear themselves once the app’s connection to WhatsApp’s servers refreshes.
Clear WhatsApp’s cache (Android)
Go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage > Clear cache. This removes temporary files without touching your chats or media.
Check the photo itself
An unusually large file, a corrupted image, or a live photo/HEIC format can occasionally fail to send. Try sending a different, smaller photo to confirm whether it’s a general sending problem or something specific to that one file.
Update the app
An outdated version of WhatsApp can develop sending bugs that are already fixed in the current release. Check the App Store or Play Store for a pending update.
