ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude: Which AI Should You Use?

ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude: Which AI Should You Use?

Quick answer: For most people, ChatGPT’s free plan is the most generous all-rounder in late 2026, Gemini is the best fit if you live in Gmail, Docs and Android, and Claude is the strongest pick for careful writing and working through long documents. All three have usable free tiers, and the main paid plans cost about $20 a month in the US.

The “best AI chatbot” changes every few months, so rather than crown a winner, this guide compares what each one actually gives you on its free and paid plans as of October 2026, and which kind of user each suits.

We haven’t run our own benchmark tests. The comparison below is based on each company’s official plan pages and help documents, linked throughout, so you can check the details yourself.

ChatGPT: the best free all-rounder

ChatGPT remains the most widely known assistant, and its free plan is generous. OpenAI’s pricing page describes it as “unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna,” with limited uploads, image creation and voice chats. Free users also got a Think button for harder questions in August 2026, according to OpenAI’s release notes.

Recent additions that help everyday users include flashcards and quizzes for studying, a ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft Word that works on all plans including Free, and voice conversations that can use connected apps.

ChatGPT paid plans

  • Go ($8/month in the US): OpenAI says it gives “10x more messages, file uploads and image creation than the free tier,” plus longer memory, per its Go announcement.
  • Plus ($20/month): per OpenAI’s help page, Plus adds higher limits and advanced reasoning. The pricing page also lists GPT-6 models and access to ChatGPT Work, the agent mode for multi-step tasks.
  • Pro (from $100/month): for heavy users, with reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra.

Downside: ChatGPT has a lot of features and plan names, which can be confusing, and the most capable models sit behind paid plans.

Gemini: best if you use Google every day

Gemini’s biggest strength is that it’s built into the Google services many people already use, including Android phones, Gmail, Docs and Drive. If you’re on an Android phone, it’s likely already there.

The free plan is getting tighter, though. From 9 October 2026, Google’s help page says free users get only the Flash-Lite model. Flash requires AI Plus, and the Pro model needs AI Pro or AI Ultra. Our full breakdown of Gemini’s free plan changes explains what that means.

Gemini paid plans

  • AI Plus ($4.99/month in the US): Flash-Lite and Flash, with 2x the standard usage. In India, TechCrunch reported a launch price of Rs 199 a month for six months, then Rs 399, including 200GB of storage.
  • AI Pro ($19.99/month): all three models, 4x the standard usage, and Deep Think, according to 9to5Google.
  • AI Ultra: the highest limits, and the first consumer plan due to get Google’s new Gemini 4 Argon model.

Gemini can also check whether an image, video or audio clip was made with Google’s AI, using its SynthID watermark. That’s a useful extra if you often see suspicious images shared in family groups.

Downside: free users now get Google’s lightest model only, and the usage limits are based on how much computing your requests need, which can be hard to predict.

Claude: best for writing and long documents

Anthropic’s Claude has a reputation for clear, natural writing and for handling long documents and code well. Its free plan includes the Sonnet and Haiku models, and according to Anthropic’s pricing page lets you “search the web, create files, and run code,” with memory across conversations and app integrations.

Claude paid plans

  • Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed annually): more usage, the Opus model, Projects, Claude Code and extensions for Chrome and Microsoft 365.
  • Max (from $100/month): a choice of 5x or 20x Pro’s usage, plus early access to features.

Downside: the free plan doesn’t include Claude’s most capable Opus model. Usage limits on the free plan are also tighter than on paid plans, so heavy users may hit them quickly.

Which AI chatbot should you choose?

Match the tool to how you’ll actually use it:

  • Students: ChatGPT’s free plan, with flashcards, quizzes and the Think button, covers most study needs.
  • Android and Google Workspace users: Gemini, because it works inside the apps you already use. Consider AI Plus if Flash-Lite feels too limited.
  • Writers, researchers and anyone handling long PDFs: Claude is worth trying first.
  • Small-business owners: start with the free tiers of two assistants for a couple of weeks, then pay for the one you open most often.
  • Coders: all three have strong options; ChatGPT (Codex) and Claude (Claude Code) are the most developer-focused.

You don’t have to pick only one. Many people use one free assistant for quick questions and pay for another they rely on for work. Whichever you choose, it’s worth reviewing its privacy settings; our guide on stopping AI chatbots from training on your chats shows how. For more comparisons, see our AI section.
