Quick answer: Googlebooks are Google’s new premium laptops running Googlebook OS, an Android-based system that borrows ChromeOS’s desktop features. They start at US$899 and began shipping on 4 October 2026. Your existing Chromebook isn’t going anywhere: Google says ChromeOS will get updates and security patches through mid-2034.
Google opened pre-orders on 21 September 2026 for five Googlebook models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. A week later, it updated its ChromeOS support page to explain what happens to the Chromebooks already in homes, schools and offices.
If you own a Chromebook, or you were planning to buy one, here’s what actually changes.
What is a Googlebook?
A Googlebook is a laptop running Googlebook OS. According to TechRepublic’s comparison, the system is built on “the Android technology stack” while bringing over desktop foundations developed for ChromeOS. In practice, that means:
- The full Chrome browser, as on a Chromebook.
- Android apps from Google Play, adapted for larger screens, a keyboard and a trackpad.
- Closer links with Android phones, including picking up tasks and files from your phone.
- Gemini AI features built into the system.
- A Linux environment based on Debian for people who need developer tools.
What it doesn’t do: run traditional Windows programs (.exe files). TechRepublic notes that Microsoft 365 apps can still open and edit Office files.
Googlebook vs Chromebook at a glance
Here’s how the two compare, based on TechRepublic’s breakdown:
| Chromebook (ChromeOS) | Googlebook (Googlebook OS) | |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | ChromeOS | Android, with ChromeOS desktop features |
| Android apps | Supported on compatible models | Built in, through Google Play |
| Windows programs | No | No |
| Linux tools | Available on supported devices | Included through a Debian environment |
| School and business management | Mature | Limited at launch, expanding from late 2027 |
| Price | Budget to premium | From US$899 |
The short version: Googlebooks are aimed at people who’d otherwise buy a mid-range Windows laptop or a MacBook, while Chromebooks remain the budget and classroom option.
How much do Googlebooks cost, and where can you buy one?
Prices start at US$899. TechRepublic’s model comparison, published 23 September 2026, lists these US launch prices:
| Model | US price | Chip | Screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acer Googlebook 14 (2-in-1) | $899 | Intel Core Ultra 5 | 14-inch 2.8K OLED |
| Dell XPS Googlebook | $999 | Snapdragon X Elite | 13.4-inch 2.5K LCD |
| Lenovo Googlebook 15 | $1,099 | Intel Core Ultra 5 | 15.3-inch 2.8K OLED |
| ASUS Googlebook 14 | $1,299 | Intel Core Ultra 5 | 14-inch 2.8K OLED |
| HP Googlebook 14 | $1,299 | Snapdragon X Elite | 14-inch 2.8K OLED |
Shipping began on 4 October 2026 in the US and 5 October in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia, according to TechRepublic and The Next Web. Android Authority reports that each purchase includes a year of Google AI Pro, and that Google’s online store and Best Buy are handling US sales.
India isn’t on the first launch list. As of 5 October 2026, we couldn’t find any official Indian pricing or launch date, so treat any rupee price you see online as unconfirmed.
Is ChromeOS being discontinued?
Eventually, yes, but not soon. Google’s ChromeOS support page says: “ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034.”
Google also says current Chromebooks keep getting updates through their supported lifetime, and “many newer commercial Chromebook models will be capable of upgrading to Googlebook OS.” It hasn’t published the list of eligible models yet. As 9to5Google pointed out, the wording is vague, and Google says it will share details later.
Google also says it will keep existing ChromeOS Enterprise and Education Upgrade licenses valid for current Chromebook fleets. That matters for schools that bought large numbers of devices in recent years: those machines aren’t being written off early.
For schools and businesses, Google says full management tools for Googlebooks will start rolling out in the second half of 2027. Until then, managed Chromebooks remain the safer pick for classrooms and offices.
I own a Chromebook. Do I need to do anything?
No. Keep using it. What matters is your Chromebook’s own Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date, which is when it stops getting updates. Here’s how to find it:
- Click the time in the bottom-right corner and open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Look for Additional details and find the Update schedule line, which shows the month your updates end.
You can also look up any model’s date before you buy, which is worth doing with discounted or older stock. A cheap Chromebook with only a year or two of updates left is rarely a bargain.
If that date is years away, you’re fine. If it’s within the next year, start planning a replacement. A Chromebook that no longer gets security updates isn’t safe for banking or school accounts.
Should you buy a Googlebook or a Chromebook right now?
It depends on your budget and what you need the laptop for.
- Buy a Chromebook if you want a cheap, simple laptop for browsing, Google Docs and schoolwork. Chromebooks still cost far less than the $899 entry price for Googlebooks, and models bought today should get updates for years, up to mid-2034.
- Consider a Googlebook if you want a premium laptop, rely heavily on Android apps and an Android phone, and like Gemini features. Remember it’s a brand-new platform, so app support and polish may take time to mature.
- Look at Windows or Mac instead if you need desktop software such as full Adobe apps, specialist work tools or PC games. At $899 and above, Googlebooks compete directly with mid-range Windows laptops and MacBooks.
Whatever you buy in 2026, memory matters more than ever. All Googlebooks start with 16GB, and our guide on how much RAM you need explains why that’s a sensible floor this year.

Will my Chromebook get Googlebook OS?
Maybe, if it’s a newer model. Google says many newer commercial Chromebooks will be able to upgrade, but it hasn’t named eligible models as of early October 2026.
When will ChromeOS stop getting updates?
Google says ChromeOS devices get regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. Each Chromebook also has its own end date, shown under About ChromeOS.
Are Googlebooks available in India?
Not yet. The first wave covers the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. Google hadn’t announced Indian availability or pricing as of 5 October 2026.
