Quick answer: Microsoft released the October 2026 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 (KB5127648) on October 13. It adds File Explorer preview changes, a remappable Copilot key, new touchpad scrolling and a Tips widget, and it is the last security update for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro. Features arrive gradually, so you may not see all of them yet.
The update covers Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2 and 24H2, and ships the same fixes to all three, according to BleepingComputer. It also contains the October security fixes, so it installs automatically through Windows Update.
It matters most to people on 24H2 Home or Pro, who now need to move to a newer version, and to anyone who uses Windows Backup or Bluetooth audio. The details below are the same for readers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Europe, although some features depend on device and market.
What is in the October 2026 Windows 11 update?
The update is KB5127648. Pureinfotech lists the builds as 26300.9711 for 26H2, 26200.9711 for 25H2 and 26100.9711 for 24H2. It was released on October 13, 2026.
The main changes reported by Windows Central and BleepingComputer are:
- File Explorer: PDFs and other non-HTML downloads preview automatically in the Preview pane. Downloaded HTML files show a “Preview anyway” button after a warning. The Home page remembers which sections you expanded or collapsed.
- Copilot key: a new setting under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard lets you remap it to Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key. Windows Latest says an app option was still rolling out when it tested.
- Touchpad: precision touchpads gain single-finger edge scrolling and continued scrolling by swiping up, under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Open apps maximized: an accessibility option under Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
- Tips widget: a new widget that can also sit on the lock screen.
- Emoji 17.0: open the emoji panel with Windows key + period.
- Camera Roll Backup: a OneDrive option for phone photos, for eligible users.
What was fixed?
Fixes include a Bluetooth audio crash with error code 0x139 during streaming, and a false switch to battery power on plugged-in laptops, per BleepingComputer. Windows Latest adds that File History backup and restore to external and network drives works again, and that domain trust is restored for devices hit by the September 14 emergency update.
Microsoft also changed Bluetooth handling for calls, microphones and LE Audio. If you had odd headset behavior, this is worth testing after you update.
What was removed?
PC-to-PC Migration is gone from Windows Backup. Windows Latest says Microsoft recommends Windows Backup instead. If you plan to move to a new PC, read our guide on how to back up Windows 11 first.
Who is affected, and what happens to Windows 11 24H2?
Windows Central says this is the last quality update for 24H2. Windows Latest adds that October 13, 2026 is the end of updates for 24H2 Home and Pro, while Enterprise and Education editions stay supported until October 12, 2027. If you are on 24H2 Home or Pro, move to 25H2 or 26H2 in Windows Update. Our overview of Windows 11 26H2 explains what the newer version adds.
Windows Latest also notes that the 26H1 version will not receive 26H2. Check your version with Settings > System > About.
Are there known problems?
BleepingComputer says Microsoft is not aware of new issues with this release, but warns that some PCs may have audio problems with USB 1.0 audio devices. Pureinfotech says some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may fail to start or produce sound, and that KB5129195 partly addresses this.
Some users report Wi-Fi authentication trouble on corporate networks. BleepingComputer treats those reports as unconfirmed, so home users are unlikely to be affected. Windows Latest also flags that the Secure Boot certificate “Windows Production PCA 2011” expires on October 19, and says some PCs may need a firmware update from the manufacturer. You can check your status under Windows Security > Device security > Secure Boot.
How do I install it?
- Create a restore point or backup, as Pureinfotech advises.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” if you want new features sooner.
- Restart when prompted. You can also download KB5127648 from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Why don’t I see the new features yet?
Microsoft rolls out many features gradually through controlled feature rollout. They can take days or weeks to appear even after you install the update.

BleepingComputer calls it a mandatory security update. It installs automatically through Windows Update unless your device is paused or managed by an organization.
