Gemini Free Plan Changes on 9 October: What You Lose

Gemini Free Plan Changes on 9 October: What You Lose

Quick answer: From 9 October 2026, the free Gemini app will only give you Google’s Flash-Lite model. The Flash and Pro models move behind paid plans: Google AI Plus keeps Flash, while AI Pro and AI Ultra keep everything. Every model also gets low, medium and high effort settings.

If you use Gemini without paying, this is the biggest change to your account in months. Google confirmed the new limits in a Gemini Apps help page, and 9to5Google reported the details on 3 October 2026.

Below is what each plan gets, what free users actually lose, and how to decide whether paying is worth it. All details are as of 5 October 2026.

What’s changing in the Gemini app on 9 October?

Google is tying model access to your subscription. Until now, free users could pick from more than one model in the Gemini app, within usage limits. After the change, the free tier is narrowed to a single, lighter model.

According to Google’s help page, the new line-up looks like this:

Plan US price (per month) Models you can use Extras
No plan (free) Free Flash-Lite Standard usage limits
Google AI Plus $4.99 Flash-Lite, Flash 2x the standard limits
Google AI Pro $19.99 Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro 4x the standard limits; Deep Think
Google AI Ultra Higher tier Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro Highest limits; Deep Think

The US prices come from 9to5Google and Notebookcheck. Google says the change starts on 9 October for people without a subscription. AI Plus subscribers will get an email telling them when the change applies to their account.

What do free Gemini users lose?

The short version: the smarter models. Flash-Lite is Google’s fastest and cheapest model. It’s fine for quick questions, simple rewrites, translations and short summaries. It’s less capable at long documents, tricky reasoning, coding and multi-step planning, which is exactly where Flash and Pro help.

Here’s what that means in practice:

  • Homework and study help: basic explanations will still work, but harder maths or long reading material may get weaker answers.
  • Work documents: summarising a long PDF or drafting a detailed report is where you’re most likely to notice the drop.
  • Everyday questions: recipes, quick facts, travel ideas and short emails should feel much the same.

Google hasn’t said how existing conversations that used Flash or Pro will behave after the switch, so expect older chats to continue on whatever model your plan allows.

What are the new low, medium and high effort settings?

Alongside the model limits, Google is adding an effort setting to every model you have access to. You’ll be able to choose low, medium or high. Google’s help page says higher effort will “increase the model’s ability to complete tasks and provide more thorough answers,” but “will also use more of your limit.”

So if you’re on the free tier, you can still ask Flash-Lite to try harder on a tough question. Just know that each high-effort answer eats into your allowance faster. A sensible habit is to keep effort on low or medium for routine requests and switch to high only when an answer isn’t good enough.

How do Gemini’s usage limits work now?

Google moved Gemini to compute-based limits earlier in 2026. Rather than counting messages, it counts how much work your requests take. Per Google’s help page, these limits “refresh every 5 hours,” up to a weekly cap.

Longer chats, complex prompts and heavier features all use more of your allowance. Paid plans multiply the limit: AI Plus gets 2x the standard amount, AI Pro gets 4x, and AI Ultra gets more still.

If you hit your limit, you’ll need to wait for it to refresh or upgrade. Starting a fresh chat for a new topic, instead of continuing a very long one, can help your allowance last longer.

What about Gemini 4 Argon and Deep Think?

Two higher-end features are worth knowing about:

  • Deep Think, which Google describes as “maximum parallel reasoning,” was previously limited to AI Ultra. From this change, AI Pro subscribers get it too.
  • Gemini 4 Argon is Google’s new frontier model, announced on 30 September 2026 on the Google blog. It’s rolling out first to “a set of trusted cyber defenders,” with consumer access to begin with Google AI Ultra subscribers. Google hasn’t said if or when it will reach AI Pro or free users.

For most people, neither of these matters day to day. They’re aimed at heavy users, researchers and professionals.

Is Google AI Plus worth it in India?

Google AI Plus is the cheapest way to keep the Flash model after 9 October. When Google launched AI Plus in India in December 2025, TechCrunch reported an introductory price of Rs 199 a month for the first six months, then Rs 399 a month. That launch plan also bundled 200GB of Google storage and family sharing for up to five people.

Prices and offers can change, so check the current price in the Google One or Gemini app before you subscribe. If you already pay for Google storage, compare what you’d pay for AI Plus, since the storage may make it better value than a standalone AI subscription.

Our take: if you use Gemini a few times a week for quick tasks, the free Flash-Lite tier will probably do. If you rely on it for study, long documents or work, AI Plus is the minimum to keep the experience you have now, and AI Pro is the one to get if you used the Pro model regularly. Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini still free after 9 October 2026?

Yes. The Gemini app stays free to use, but free accounts will only have the Flash-Lite model. Flash and Pro need a paid Google AI plan.

Which Gemini plan keeps the Pro model?

Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra. AI Plus loses access to Pro and keeps Flash-Lite and Flash.

When will AI Plus subscribers see the change?

Google says AI Plus subscribers will get an email with the date the change applies to them. Free users see it from 9 October.

Does the change affect Gemini in Gmail and Google Docs?

Google’s help page covers the Gemini app. It doesn’t spell out changes to Gemini inside Workspace apps, so check your plan’s details if you rely on those features at work.
